Tier 1 Handgun (Fundamentals/Defensive)
Course Length: 1 day or 2 day options.
Course Description: Tier 1 handgun introduces or refreshes the basic handgun skills required for effective real-world operation of the handgun. Students will have fundamental skills instructed or enhanced through focused teaching on stress performance, threat confrontation and confronting 3-D threats. This is a reality-focused course tailored to the use of force situations.
Identifying the techniques and skills most lacking in foundational handgun training, Tier 1 Handgun primary goal is to provide students with a more functional and realistic approach to handgun use in a violent encounter.

- Real world safety
- Handgun selection
- Ammunition selection
- Equipment selection
- Concealment clothing
- Fundamentals of marksmanship
- Psychological and physiological effects of stress on the body
- Mindset and the effects of stress on the body
- Human anatomy and the three dimensional threat
- Drawing from IWB/OWB
- “Want to” and “Need to” reloads
- Malfunction clearing (immediate and remedial action)
- Shooting positions
- Movement
- On cover/ off cover shooting
- Austere shooting positions
- Practical and precision accuracy
- Transitioning to/from less lethal equipment and restraints under threat
- Managing compliant threats
- Judgment shooting
- Contact with Emergency services/ First responders
Course cost: R2000.00
Mandatory Equipment:
Handgun with 3 magazines (single stack, 5-7 magazines)
- OWB/ IWB holster (cross-draw prohibited)
- 250 – 500 Rounds handgun
- 50 round carry ammo
- Weapon mounted light (if carried)
- Ear and eye protection
- Hat
- Long sleeves recommended (pants mandatory)
Optional (recommended) Equipment:
- Gloves
- Jacket (Weather and season dependent)
- Sunblock
- Hydration
- Field cleaning kit
- Basic maintenance tools
- Additional magazines for all weapons
Class size: Minimum of 4, no more than 12 students
